A Zoar resident and Ladysmith teacher, Niklaas Adams, was recently arrested after being found with around 200 cannabis plants growing on his property. This is somewhat of a crazy number, and may be hard to justify that 200 plants are what’s necessary for personal consumption. However, there doesn’t seem to be concrete evidence of intent to sell/deal or any other illegal action.
Niklaas appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate Court on January the 10th. There has not been much more released in terms of the charge of possession that was laid against the 67 year old.
After police obtained a warrant to search his property, they came across 100 3m tall monsters! They also found about 130 young plants of about 50cm tall.
Adams was released on bail and is said to have appeared in court on the 17th of January. Unfortunately, again, the situation has quietened down and we haven’t heard more in terms of what the outcome was, or will be.
Teachers smoking or consuming cannabis may be somewhat frowned upon. Not many parents will want their youngsters’ future in a ‘degenerate stoners’ hands. This is just one of the stigmas than need further breaking down, but that’s the general sentiment we are working with at the moment. However, a teacher who smokes shouldn’t be assumed any less capable of teaching.
We will continue to keep an ear to the ground in the hopes or more information being released sooner rather than later. This arrest again comes after Sitole warns officers over unlawful arrests. While we are still in a grey area in terms of how much cannabis we are legally allowed to possess on our private property, it would appear that Adams shows no threat or intention to deal in cannabis.
