These lovely blue boxes have been scattered around Chicago’s airports. The point is that legal cannabis consumers can safely and responsibly dispose of their bud before they jump on their flight in these cannabis amnesty boxes. However, one man saw this as an opportunity to help himself to a decent selection of leftover flower. Although they’re not quite sure how he managed to access the box or what it was that he got away with.
Spokesperson of the Chicago Police, Anthony Guglielmi, stated that an individual “removed an unknown object from inside” one of these boxes. He then went on to remind the public that tampering with these boxes is a criminal offence. An investigation is ongoing and they intend to bring the perpetrator to justice.
High Flying Chicago
Passengers aren’t encouraged to bring cannabis along to the airport, but if you accidentally find leftovers in your pocket you can now safely dispose of it. New laws in Illinois permit adults (aged 21 and over) to purchase and possess up to 28 grams of cannabis. These laws were only put into place from the start of 2020, but the state has experienced quite a cannabis boom since legalisation.
This will further expunge the previous convictions of over 100 000 individuals, previously charges with minor, non-violent cannabis-related charges. This Illinois also now represents the 11th state to legalise adult-use recreational cannabis.
Guglielme has said that the current cannabis amnesty boxes are just a temporary measure. Soon they intend on replacing these with more permanent boxes, which will be more secure and prevent anyone from accessing them who isn’t supposed to be.
