Stoner Steve’s Strain of the Month for August: Zkittles

Finding decent cannabis strains locally can be tough – it seems like places such as Canada or the US have all the good stuff. However, with the growing cannabis community, more growers are finding these strains that garner their popularity overseas before growing them on local soil. 

Such an example could be Zkittles – a strain that won Best Indica at the 2015 High Times Cannabis Cup, along with other accolades. This sweet strain garnered plenty of popularity overseas before local growers started getting their hands on these genetics. Although more popular than before, this strain can still be hard to come by! Luckily for me, I managed to grab a few nugs and give this strain a test this August. 

Zkittles has an exciting lineage, being an indica dominant mix of Grape Ape and Grapefruit. These genetics provide nice fat colas and subtle purple hues to your nugs. The nugs are dense and have clear indica traits to them, as well as being absolutely covered in trichomes! You also get a great terpene profile dominated by peppery scents, paired with sweet and fruity aromas – giving you a deliciously flavourful experience when consumed. 

I had never seen or smoked this strain before so I was very excited to do so! I’d heard many good things about this strain so I had high hopes, and I am pleased to say that I was not disappointed. Being a fan of indica varieties, this strain gave me all that I love about indicas, without it being too heavy on the mind or body. 

After ripping a fat, sweet bowl of Zkittles, I was able to relax in the evenings and feel less anxious about the crazy happenings around me. I felt it relax my body and mind and allowed me to unwind, but it did so without making me feel too foggy or weighed down. My thoughts were still clear and my body was rested but ready to move. 

An hour later I hit another bowl and really noticed the peppery but fruity aroma of the strain. The natural tones were there but I was surprised to get a burst of fruity, sour Skittles. Even as the smoke lingers, my partner commented on the sweetness in the air. Two bowls were enough for me this evening as I felt myself sink deeper into the couch after my second rip and heard my bed calling me. 

The sleep that Zkittles can provide is definitely one of my favourite benefits of this strain. It helped me fall into a nice deep sleep, but not so deep that I woke up foggy the next morning. My body felt well-rested and mentally I felt revitalised and ready for the day ahead. I would definitely recommend this strain for anyone with trouble sleeping! 

All in all, this strain checks all the boxes for me. It’s delicious, beautiful to look at and it is perfect for rest and relaxation. As far as indicas go this is definitely one of my favourites and epitomises everything a modern indica should. I’ve stocked up on a couple more grams in the meantime, and have started my search for some Zkittles seeds/clones to grow in the coming season. Seeing as it ticks all of my personal boxes, I think it is a fitting Strain of the Month for August.
