A new age is dawning on the South African cannabis industry. With the decriminalisation of homegrown marijuana possession and consumption, as well as the sale and purchase of hemp-derived CBD products, we are entering into a new era – and HelloMD South Africa are at the forefront.
Changes in the Law
In September 2018, the South African Government made changes to legislation for a 24 month period. The ruling allowed for the growing and consumption of cannabis for personal and private purposes. As of March 2019, further changes were made for a 12 month period allowing the sale and purchase of CBD wellness products. This has been a leap in the right direction for the cannabis industry. This shows that the government has become more lenient with cannabis and has opened up the space for the future of the plant in our context.
The Green Rush
With these changes being made, the cannabis industry in South Africa has exploded. Shops are now providing all the necessary resources to start your own home-grow, from tents, lights to plant nutrients and seeds. These changes have opened up the CBD space with new brands popping up everywhere you look.
HelloMD South Africa
HelloMD saw this opportunity arising and decided that South Africa was the perfect place to start expanding their venture of cannabis education. In a context where marijuana has been illegal, it was seen as vital to start educating the people on all things cannabis. HelloMD itself is the leading digital healthcare platform in the U.S. for medical personnel, brands and consumers – with over one hundred thousand website users.
The South African operation has opened offices in Sandton, Johannesburg. They are currently providing an educational platform with articles and Q&A’s based around cannabis. They provide an open space for all to confidentially ask their cannabis questions, educate themselves through articles, and interact with like-minded people. They are aiming to build up the local community of consumers and activists, built around the HelloMD South Africa website as the central hub, as well as their Instagram, Facebook and Twitter
It doesn’t end there either, with plans to open up an online CBD store in September and eventually provide the full Dr Consultation service in the near future. They will be emulating their American sister by providing premium services and products but localised to the South African context.
South Africa has the potential and opportunity to be one of the biggest cannabis industries in the world. It’s time to embrace the new wave.
