The Faces Behind ‘fourfivecbd’ – an Interview

CBD is taking off in South Africa! And luckily for us, this is attracting the attention of international companies like fourfivecbd, allowing them to bring an international standard to local soil.

Fourfivecbd hasn’t been a feature on South African soil for all that long but they’re already making an impact on the local CBD and cannabis industry. Started by Dom Day and George Kruis, the UK brand launched in South Africa in October 2019 and have already come a long way since then.

Dom and George are professional rugby players and know everything about the impact of the sport on the body. Which is partly what introduced them to CBD, looking for ways they could manage the hard hits and speed up recovery – helping them be at their best every game.

We wanted to gain insight into their perspectives of CBD and cannabis culture, so we had a quick chat with the faces behind fourfivecbd.

Dom Day – Welsh international rugby player
George Kruis – English, British and Irish Lions international rugby player

What inspired the name ‘fourfivecbd’?
Fourfive are our jersey numbers in rugby. Picking a name was a difficult task and took us weeks, but when we heard ‘fourfive’ we were both sold.

What did you first use CBD for?
I had a knee operation in January 2018 and it coincided with WADA removing CBD from the banned substance list. I had such great results and it helped my recovery massively.

Most painful surgery and what was the cause?
It was actually having my appendix out in 2015. The doctor missed the cause of the pain and my appendix ruptured which led to me getting an infection and pneumonia. Bad times.

Tell us more about the intensity of Rugby and the impact on the body, and why CBD can help these athletes.
The modern game is intense week in week out. Players are getting bigger, faster and stronger every year so recovery is key if you want to keep performing at your best. For me CBD is an addition to my recovery routine, I use it daily and feel I recover faster and am able to train consistently.

Tell us about your first experience with cannabis/CBD.
I read about CBD online and the next day I went and bought a vape pen with CBD oil, even though I’m not a smoker. Once I educated myself I realised there were other ingestion methods and I moved on to CBD oil that is placed under the tongue.

What is your favourite fourfivecbd product?
I use the 1000mg oil morning and night and it helps me have quality sleep. I also love the muscle rub, it gives a cooling effect to the muscles after a tough session.

What has surprised you most about cannabis culture and the community?
I love the hardcore cannabis lovers who have been in the industry for 20-30 years. They are so full of knowledge and have been promoting the benefits of CBD and cannabis religiously for years. It’s a tight knit community but as the benefits of cannabis become more apparent the more people there are joining the community.

What are your personal feelings about the SAHPRA 20mg daily maximum dosage of CBD?
Firstly it’s great that some sort of guidance is given, that’s more than most countries in the world. But as more research is done I’m sure we will see how safe CBD is and we will eventually see an increase in daily dosage.

What can we look forward to from fourfivecbd?
We are doing some exciting research and development for new products and we have some exciting ambassadors joining us in the near future.

The team over at fourfivecbd have shown us their positivity and excitement for the future of CBD in South Africa. It’s refreshing to see a company bring a different focus with them, having being introduced to the cannabis compound through the world of sports. Not only are they an awesome group of people, but they have also brought an international standard of product to local soil without asking ridiculous prices.

Although their CBD products may be slightly more focused towards the active consumer, their products should be considered by all of those looking to venture into CBD or simply get their next top up.

Be sure to check them out across all of their various social media platforms and their website. Their product selection can be found on their personal store, or Takealot, CBDstore and HelloMD.

Watch their space, they have some big things coming to South Africa very soon!
